PHI has impacted 12 IDP Camps in 6 States and still counting
Pro-Health International’s  visits to the Internally Displaced Persons camps was born out of a desire to help the poor and less privileged. We were just trying to live up to our mission as an impact making organization. We started with one camp per time, one state per time. Little did we know that what started as a small step will grow into something big. Looking back at how  far we have gone and how much impact we have made, we can only say that Pro-Health International was designed to do this. Our experience with the IDPs has thought us that great impact can be found in little gestures. And when you start from where you are, life will bring the people, resources and opportunities required to push that vision.

There are things you see that bring joy and fulfillment to your heart, but at the same time bring tears to your eyes. This was the experience of everyone who visited the Luvu IDP camp in Nassarawa State and Durumi IDP camp in Abuja. These camps had been going through a lot of difficulties since they relocated to Nasarrawa State and Abuja from Borno State. During our assessment of the camps, we found out they needed food, lots of them. They also needed clothing, mattresses, medical care and psychosocial support. Our hearts bled when we saw how hunger had dealt with them. On leaving the camps after our assessment, we knew we just had to urgently do something.

One of the things we have found out in our work with the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the different states in Nigeria is that they desire to talk to someone. Their hearts long to share their stories. They want to let out the pain, the sorrows and the tough experiences they have been through. This is one of the first and major things we do when we get to a new IDP camp. We carry out an assessment or baseline survey of the camp. Through these assessments, we get to hear their stories, find out their present conditions at the camp, what their needs are and so on. It is in this process that we ask questions and take the position of a listener.

Celebrating 25 years of philanthropy – Our 2016 Experience

It has been a long drive down this road and just like that it is 25 years. In line with celebrating the spirit of philanthropy, Pro-Health International organized a four-day free medical outreach for the people of Kurudu, Karu LGA, Nassarawa State between the 5th and 8th December 2016. The first day had a significant number of the people from the Kurudu community come to the Project Site (Comprehensive Primary Health Care Centre, Kurudu) for free medical care, from which the team of volunteers; doctors and other specialists, recorded a huge success.
